Why your deadbolt sticks, and what to try first

Short answer

Test the bolt with the door open. If it moves freely open but sticks closed, it is alignment. If it sticks either way, it is the lock or key.

The open-door test

Open the door and turn the deadbolt. Smooth action points to the strike plate or door shifting. Rough action points to the cylinder or bolt mechanism.

Common causes

  • Door sag from loose hinge screws
  • Seasonal swelling or shrinking
  • A worn key, or a copy made from a worn key
  • Dirt or old lubricant in the cylinder

What not to do

Do not force the key with pliers. That can snap the key in the cylinder and turn a minor issue into a lockout.

When to call instead of reading

  • The lock sticks with the door open
  • A key has broken or bent
  • You cannot lock the door at all

Common follow-up questions

Can a new key fix it?

If the key is worn, a key cut to the original code can help. A copy of a worn key copies the wear.

Should I use graphite?

Follow the lock maker’s recommendation. Heavy oils can attract dirt.
