Short answer

You cannot know every copy that was made. Rekeying or replacing exterior locks, plus resetting codes, gives you a clean start.

Walk the perimeter first

Count every door that leads outside or to an attached garage. Include basement and patio doors. That count is what you will ask about on the phone.

Locks are only part of access

Previous owners may still have garage remote codes, keypad codes or smart-lock accounts.

  • Reset garage keypad and remotes
  • Remove previous smart-lock users and reset the hub if applicable
  • Change alarm codes with your alarm provider
  • Collect all mailbox and outbuilding keys

If you rent

Check your lease before changing locks. Most landlords need approval and a working key. Ask the landlord to arrange or approve rekeying between tenants.

When to call instead of reading

  • Moving day is complete and you want one new key for every door
  • A lock from the previous owner is worn or damaged
