Short answer

Repair when parts are available and the hardware is otherwise sound. Replace when damage is extensive, the function is wrong or parts are unavailable.

Look at the whole door

A closer that does not pull the door shut, a sagging hinge or a shifted frame can make a good lock look broken.

Signs repair may work

  • A loose lever or trim
  • A latch that sticks but is not broken
  • Intermittent problems that follow weather or door slams

Signs replacement may be better

  • Damage from forced entry
  • Parts are no longer available
  • The lock function no longer suits how the door is used

When to call instead of reading

  • The door will not secure at closing
  • Damage after an attempted entry
